Whilst most women attempt to remove cellulite after it has made an appearance, it is perhaps advisable to consider the causes of cellulite in order to prevent it instead. Changes in your lifestyle may to a certain extent reduce the appearance of cellulite, but it is best to control it before it emerges. Although the causes of cellulite are not well known, there are several risk factors, which can contribute to its appearance.

Cellulite is caused by fat deposits, which distort the connective tissues below the surface of the skin. Whilst previously cellulite was linked to obesity, it is now clear that the majority of skinny women also have subcutaneous fat, which is the type found beneath the skin. Although the reduction of fat may contribute to reducing the appearance of skin dimpling, it will not eliminate the cause. Usually, cellulite is caused by a combination of factors and is not attributed to only one cause. Below are a number of risk factors, which are thought to contribute to the appearance of “orange peel”.

Gender. Although it is a myth that women are the only ones who are at risk of cellulite, it is in fact much more common in women than in men. This is because fat distribution varies across gender, as women have more subcutaneous fat around the pelvic area. Therefore, you are much more at risk of cellulite when you are female, but you are not completely safe if you are male.

Genetics. Genes seem to be the greatest factor in the appearance of cellulite. Certain genes are necessary for its development and it appears to be a hereditary condition. Therefore, if your family has a history of cellulite, there is a high possibility that you will also develop it at some point.

Hormonal imbalance. An excess of estrogen is one of the major causes of cellulite, as it weakens the connective tissue beneath the skin. Thus, birth control pill may contribute to cellulite due to the high flow of estrogen in your body. Hormonal imbalance can be treated in a number of ways, including hormonal drugs.

Lack of exercise. Symptoms of cellulite may be avoided through regular exercise, as one of the causes of it is poor lymphatic and blood circulation. Exercise can also lower your body fat and increase your muscle tone, which will in turn reduce the appearance of skin dimpling considerably.

Diet. Poor eating habits, in particular the consumption of fat, carbohydrates and salt, can also contribute to the formation of cellulite. This is because they produce damaging chemicals and toxins, which get trapped in the tissue. This is also linked to incomplete digestion and insufficient water intake, as water flushes out excess toxins from the body.

Lifestyle factors. Smoking can weaken the skin and damage the connective tissue, which will, in turn, cause cellulite to form. Furthermore, stress can also be a factor in the formation of cellulite, as it causes excess amounts of catecholamine, which is a hormone associated with its appearance.
