They were the books that sold over 100 million copies, while the film is expected to absolutely dominate the box office upon its release on Valentine’s Day.
Fifty Shades of Grey has taken the world by storm and has brought the topic of sadomasochism and other highly sexual issues right to forefront of the public mind.
How Did it All Start?
The first book of Fifty Shades of Grey was published back in 2011, by an author who at the time was relatively unknown in the form of E.L. James.
The series of three books covers the relationship between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. The former is a 21-year-old college student, while Grey is a hugely wealthy entrepreneur.
However, this relationship isn’t the typical romance that is depicted in most fiction. Instead, it’s based purely on Grey’s sordid beliefs – with the businessman’s sexual preferences being solely dedicated to BDSM.
Not only this, his wealth has allowed him to exercise incredible power with these fetishes, including the construction of a special dungeon to carry out the dominance/submission routines.
An extra twist surrounds the contract that he makes all of his female conquests sign – stating that the relationship is purely sexual and nothing else.
In the UK at least, the book has made E.L. James the best-selling author of all times. The novel has sold more than the accumulative total of the Harry Potter series, which just highlights how much it captured the public’s attention.
Despite this, it has had its critics. Many have been quick to suggest that the writing style is poor, with its vivid representation of sexual scenes being the suggested reason why it has been received so well by the masses.
It’s also worth mentioning that while all of the attention is focussed on Fifty Shades of Grey, few people realise that the remaining two books go by slightly different names.
Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed follow on from the first novel and cover the different stages of the relationship that Anastasia and Christian have. They’re not quite as sexual and visual, yet still managed to perform exceptionally well in the boo charts.
What About The Film?
Over the last few weeks it would be fair to say that Fifty Shades of Grey has been broadcast into our faces from every possible angle. It’s due to the upcoming release of the film, with the producers opting for the apt release date of Valentine’s Day.
Starring Jamie Dornon as Christian Grey and Dakota Johnson as Anastasia, the film is already expected to smash all sorts of records.
In the United States, where it has been released, it has already managed to achieve this. For example, one ticket selling site revealed that it became the fastest selling R-rated title in the whole of the website’s history.
Despite the insane popularity, it’s not all been positive. Some websites have given the film poor reviews, stating that despite its erotic reputation, the sexual scenes are actually quite lame.
Nevertheless, the directing and acting has been praised by many quarters and the fact that discussions are underway to cover the remaining two books speaks volumes about its anticipated success.
The 3-for-2 Collection
Now that we have got the book and film introductions over with, it’s time to move onto the more “exciting” elements.
Simply Pleasure have released a 3 for 2 collection of sex accessories that are based on the series, most of which have the Fifty Shades of Grey branding name attached.
The big issue here is that they haven’t just bought the rights to display the name of the franchise on these products; they’ve actually got the nodding approval from E.L. James.
What this means is that she has given the go-ahead to products which she envisages are used in the sexually-driven world of Christian Grey.
This is THE Collection For Those Who Want to Experience Similar Heights …
The collection aims to replicate the intense nature of the film and while some of the accessories are quite “standard” in relation to bedroom play, others are based on the dark sides of the film.
Starting with some of the more innocent accessories (although some would still debate this term), the Simply Pleasure collection covers vibrators in every shape or form imaginable.
Whether they are used alone or in couples play, it’s possible to find everything from standard vibrators, bullets, remote-controlled versions to even ones which are powered via a USB connection.
In other words, Simply Pleasure is slowly easing you into their collection, by boosting your sex life through these enhancers.
It’s not all about vibrators though, with the collection also covering some of the other usual suspects. Lube, condoms and massage oils are all part of the pack, meaning that even the “no-frills” Fifty Shades of Grey enthusiast can enjoy the offer.
What About Those People Who Really Want to Live Inside The Film?
Of course, Simply Pleasure’s collection isn’t based on the series for no reason whatsoever. In other words, this isn’t just your standard sex collection – it also happens to contain all of the types of toys and gadgets that are featured in the movie series.
Forget the lube and condoms here; it’s time to move onto some of Christian Grey’s favourite gadgets. Think whips, handcuffs, nipple clamps and leashes. In other words, it’s all of the toys which have made the Fifty Shades of Grey book and film so popular.
The collection aims to bring all of these fantasies to life and even if you haven’t dabbled in these experiences in the past, the fact that Simply Pleasure have gained the Fifty Shades of Grey label to their product collection suggests that these products promote the ideal opportunity.
As the collection name tells you as well, you can buy three of these products for the price of two. As such, if you are just used to the standard sex toys, it might be an idea to take advantage of your third “freebie” and experiment…
Is The Collection Just For UK Buyers?
Unfortunately, Simply Pleasure is only being marketed to residents of the UK at the moment.
However, fear not, if you are based across the pond in the US, there are alternatives. For example, LoveHoney offers a similar product range.
Admittedly, they’re not specifically focussed on the Fifty Shades of Grey series, but this is a retailer that covers practically every sexual preference out there.
EDIT : LoveHoney has just intoduced the official collection of Fifty Shades of Grey. Now you can buy if you are located in the US.
Therefore, if you do want to experiment and live in the States, this is the shop to go to.
Will The Fifty Shades of Grey Hype Continue?
If the last few weeks are anything to go by, the obsession over Fifty Shades of Grey and E.L. James is only going to get bigger.
This is something that has transformed literature, transformed the big screen and by the looks of things, is also set to transform our own bedroom experiences.
We’re by no means suggesting that everyone is going to start engaging in BDSM and similar fetish-led practices, but the book and film has certainly opened up our senses a bit and perhaps made some of us consider experimenting in antics that once would have never crossed our mind…
EDIT : two new movies were already announced,
Fifty Shades Darker – 2017 – imdb link
Fifty Shades Freed – 2018 – imdb link
