The 10 Best Homemade Hair Treatments

Take a trip to the local beauty store and your jaw will probably hit the floor. These are establishments which might have products that are endorsed by the celebrities, but they also happen to cost an arm and a leg to buy.

Fortunately, all is not lost. Some women simply nip to their fridge in a bid to fine-tune their hair, with this being one of the best sources for the ultimate natural product. Gone are the days when you have to save up a week’s wages to afford the latest conditioner, here are the ten best ways to make your own and probably reap better results.

For Everyone…

raw egg

As strange as it may sound, slapping on a raw egg is the best approach for most people. This is the universal natural ingredient, with the yolk containing plenty of proteins and ultimately proving to be a moisturizer, while the white is able to remove those nasty oils.

How do I use it?

Step #1: If you have normal hair, use the entire egg. If you have oily hair, dispose of the yolk and only use the egg white.

Step #2: Take the above mixture and pour it into half a cup.

Step #3: Leave on the hair for twenty minutes, before rinsing with cool water.

Step #4: Wash as normal and admire the results.

Step #5: Rinse and repeat (pardon the pun) as often as once a fortnight.

For Dull Hair…

yoghurt hair treatment

For the purposes of this article, our definition of dull is those scalps which have lost their shine. Unfortunately, this is quite common, with your typical commercial styling products usually being the main enemy.

This is where sour cream or plain yoghurt comes in, with both containing quantities of lactic acid that will extract any dirt from the hair. They also contain plenty of milk fat and this performs an excellent job as a moisturizer.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Pop to your fridge and find a cup of sour cream or plain yoghurt.

Step #2: Pour your chosen ingredient into half a cup.

Step #3: Massage the mixture into damp hair and leave for twenty minutes.

Step #4: Rinse out the mixture with warm water, before doing the same with cool water and utilising shampoo as normal.

Step #5: Rinse and repeat as often as once a fortnight.

For Those That Can’t Resist an Itch…

olive iol abd lemon juice homemade hair treatment

These days, it’s not just babies who have those dreaded itchy and flaky scalps. Stressful lives, dreadful diets and even global warming can play a part in this, but there is a simple solution. This time it arrives in the form of lemon juice and olive oil, with the high-acidity levels combining perfectly with the moisture that the oil possesses.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Take 2 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp water and 2 tbsp olive oil and mix in a cup.

Step #2: Massage the mixture gently into the scalp and leave for twenty minutes.

Step #3: Rinse out the mixture and shampoo the hair as normal.

Step #4: Rinse and repeat as often as once a fortnight.

For The Finer Hair in Life…

hair treatment with beer

Your eyebrows may have been raised higher than you’d have ever imagined up to this point, but they’re about to move a little more. For those women with fine hair, the solution is none other than to grab a beer. We all know about the yeast content in a beer, and this is exactly what can boost your limp head of hair.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Open up a can of beer and leave it to stand for a couple of hours, allowing it to go flat.

Step #2: Mix the flat beer with 1 tsp light oil and a raw egg.

Step #3: Massage the solution into your damp hair and leave for twenty minutes.

Step #4: Rinse the beer out with cool water.

Step #5: Rinse and repeat as often as once a fortnight.

For Burnt Hair…

honey for burnt hair

Nowadays, one of the biggest hair complaints is amongst those women who have spent too much time basking in the sun. It completely dries the hair out, and the only cure is to hydrate it to the extreme. Honey is the best natural product to achieve this, with the ingredient not only prompting immediate moisture but also being able to keep the hair in this condition for the foreseeable future.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Take a jar of honey and pour it into half a cup. If your hair is particularly bad, add an egg yolk to enhance the effect.

Step #2: Apply it to your damp hair, and allow it to stand there for twenty minutes.

Step #3: Wash out the product with warm water.

Step #4: Rinse and repeat as often as once a month.

For The Oily Head…

Corn-Meal for greasy hair

On the opposite side of the spectrum we have the greasy head and while most women will spend hundreds of dollars every year attempting to remove the dreaded grease, this is completely unnecessary. Instead, either cornmeal or cornstarch will work wonders and immediately remove any grease that they stumble across.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Find either 1 tbsp of cornmeal or cornstarch and pour into an old salt or pepper shaker.

Step #2: Sprinkle the mixture (just like you do with salt and chips) onto your scalp.

Step #3: Wait ten minutes before using a paddle hairbrush to remove the mixture.

Step #4: This procedure can be performed as often as once every two days.

For Hair with Residue…

baking soda for your hair

This is probably one of the most common problems of the lot, but ultimately holds one of the simplest solutions. Baking soda is the answer and this product will simply break down all of the acidic compounds that have gathered on your scalp.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Take one or two tbsp of baking soda and mixed with a mild amount of water, making sure that a thick solution is created.

Step #2: Massage the solution into your scalp and wait for fifteen minutes.

Step #3: Wash out the mixture with water, before washing as normal.

Step #4: Rinse and repeat as often as twice per month.

For The Frizzy Head…

avocado hair treatment

It’s another relatively common problem, but you’ll just have to tap into your oriental fruit and veg store to sort it. Avocado is the natural product of choice this time and as well as repairing the damaged hair, it will make the most noticeable difference by weighing down the hair that’s seemingly always all over the place.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Find an avocado, peel it, remove the stone and mash it up. If your hair is particularly frizzy, consider adding an egg yolk to enhance the solution.

Step #2: Massage the mashed result into your damp hair, waiting for fifteen minutes before progressing to the next stage.

Step #3: Rinse your head with water.

Step #4: Rinse and repeat as often as every fortnight.

For The Curly Head…

baking soda for your hair

The funny thing about life is that those with poker-straight hair will do anything to have the curls, and those with curls will always whip out the straighteners. If you happen to fall into the latter category, this homemade remedy is for you. Baking soda is the principle ingredient of choice and again works to manipulate the hair with its extra ‘weight’.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Boil the kettle and add the water to a quarter of the mug.

Step #2: Add the baking soda to make half a cup of the solution, before leaving to cool.

Step #3: Massage or spray into your hair.

Step #4: Rinse off the product and admire the result.

For The Straight and Narrow…

rice flour

We’ve just looked at curly head workarounds, so we may as well conclude on methods to combat the straight heads. If you’re sick of damaging your follicles with those dreaded curlers this might be the step for you. It contains a whole host of ingredients, with the concoction combining to add a little more flexibility to your straight head of hair.

How do I use it?

Step #1: Gather one egg white, 5 tbsp rice flour and one cup of fuller’s earth and mix together as a paste.

Step #2: Massage into the head and comb it into the hair as much as possible.

Step #3: Wait for an hour before washing off as normal.

Step #4: Rinse and repeat as often as once a week.
